What Is A Cap Iron

The unglamorous second blade that does more to stop tearout than anything else on the plane.

The cap iron is the second blade in a bench plane — the curved piece of steel screwed to the flat back of the cutting iron, so the two travel as a sandwich through the plane. It goes by two names, and both are accurate: cap iron for the way it caps the cutting iron, and chipbreaker for the more important thing it does to the shaving. It is the least glamorous part of the plane and, set correctly, does more to give you a clean surface than anything else on the tool.

Its two jobs

The cap iron earns its keep in two ways. The first is stiffness: a plane iron is a thin blade, and thin steel under load wants to vibrate and flex, which shows up as chatter — a fine washboard ripple in the surface. Screwing the heavier cap iron tight to its back turns two thin pieces into one rigid unit that resists that vibration. On the older, thinner factory irons this stiffening role really matters.

The second job is the one it is named for: breaking the chip. As the cutting edge lifts a shaving, the shaving runs up the back of the iron and meets the leading edge of the cap iron, which forces it to bend sharply and curl. When the cap iron is set very close to the cutting edge, that bend happens so soon that the shaving is broken before it can lever a chip up out of the surface ahead of the blade — and that is what prevents tearout.

The modern understanding: the cap iron controls tearout

For a long time woodworkers treated the cap iron mainly as a stiffener and relied on a tight mouth and a high cutting angle to fight tearout. Then work revisiting old research made the case clearly: a cap iron set veryclose to the cutting edge — on the order of a few tenths of a millimeter, close enough that it looks almost on top of the edge — is the single most powerful tearout control a bench plane has. Set that close, it lets an ordinary bevel-down plane take a clean shaving on grain that would otherwise tear badly, without closing the mouth right down or grinding a steep back-bevel. Almost nobody sets it aggressively enough at first; the instinct is to leave it well back, and that is exactly why so many people fight tearout they could have designed out. How close to set it

There is no single number, because it depends on the wood and the shaving, but the principle is simple: the more trouble the grain gives you, the closer the cap iron goes. For general work you might set it a millimeter or so back and forget it. For a fine finishing pass on cooperative grain, closer. For difficult, reversing, figured wood, so close you can barely see daylight between the two edges — and expect the shaving to come off more crinkled and to push a little harder, which is the price of a torn-free surface. The practical way to find it is to start close, take a pass, and back off slightly if the plane clogs or resists too much, or close in further if you still see tearout. Fitting and honing the leading edge

A cap iron only works if it seats on the cutting iron with no gapat its leading edge. If there is any daylight where the two meet, shavings drive up under the cap iron and pack the throat solid, and the plane jams mid-stroke — the classic clogging fault that feels like a broken plane and is really just a badly fitted cap iron. So fitting it is worth doing properly:

  • Check the seat. Hold the cap iron down on the iron against the light and look along the front edge. Any line of light is a gap you need to close.
  • Hone the leading edge. A few strokes on a stone dress the front edge flat and true so it sits tight against the iron. Some woodworkers also put a small secondary bevel of roughly 45 to 50 degrees on the very front of the cap iron, which presents a steeper face to the shaving and sharpens its tearout-breaking effect.
  • Keep the back of the iron flat.The cap iron can only seat against a flat surface, so a cutting iron whose back is not flattened will fight a good fit — the same flat back you prepare when you sharpen, described in how to sharpen a plane iron.

Done once, this fit lasts; you only revisit it if you nick or reshape the cap iron's front edge.

Bevel-up planes have no cap iron

One important exception: bevel-upplanes — low-angle block planes, bevel-up jacks and smoothers — have no cap iron at all. The iron sits bevel-up on the bed with nothing capping it, so there is no chipbreaker to set close. These planes control tearout by other means: a tight mouth, and raising the effective cutting angle by honing a steeper bevel on the single iron. The small part that pays off every pass

It is easy to ignore the cap iron because it looks like a bracket rather than a working part. But learning to set it close is one of the highest-return skills in hand planing: it costs nothing, wears nothing out, and turns a plane that tears on figured wood into one that finishes it cleanly.
