That matters more on this site than on most, because the buyer we write for is trying to buy a tool once. A discount is only worth anything if it lands on the tool you would have bought at full price. So this page does two things a normal deals page does not: it tells you, from last year's actual sale pages, which classes of hand tool genuinely discount in November and which almost never do — so you know whether waiting costs you anything — and it lists the current top pick from each of our ranked lists with its live price, so you have a real number to compare a November price against.
What historically discounts, and what rarely does
We went back through last year's Black Friday pages from the retailers and makers that matter for hand tools, and read what was on them. The sources are linked at the bottom; here is the shape of it, without embellishment.
The premium makers do not run a percentage-off Black Friday.Lie-Nielsen publishes no sale, coupon or Black Friday promotion anywhere we could find; the only concession on their own site is free shipping on orders placed at one of their in-person Hand Tool Events, with the biggest planes and benches excluded even from that. Lee Valley — the Veritas maker — does run a Cyber Monday event, but what its own pages describe is discounted gift cardsfor a future purchase and a separate “Veritas Seconds” event for cosmetically imperfect tools, both now marked expired for last year. We did not find a published percentage off first-quality Veritas tools, and we are not going to imply one. If you want a Lie-Nielsen or a Veritas, the honest guidance is that November is not a reason to wait.
The specialist retailers lead with machines.Woodcraft's Black Friday collection ran November 21 through December 5 last year and its headline offers were bandsaws, dust collectors and lathes. Its hand tool deals page did carry real hand tools at retrieval — a WoodRiver bench plane about fourteen percent under its regular price, a Razorsaw ryoba at half, rasps at a fifth off — but that was a handful of items on a page dominated by the house brand. Rockler's event, as covered by Bob Vila on the day, was a lathe, a panel clamp, an air filter, a miter fence and Bench Cookies; the one hand tool mentioned was a spokeshave. Neither retailer's page listed Lie-Nielsen, Veritas or Narex at all.
Amazon's hand tool deals cluster at the budget end.Amazon's 2025 event ran from November 20 through Cyber Monday on December 1. The two deal roundups we read that tracked Amazon through the event tell the same story from opposite ends: ToolGuyd's list had no chisels, planes, hand saws, squares or stones on it at all, only sawhorses, vises and a clamp set; 731 Woodworks' list did have a hand tool section, and it was a four-piece import chisel set, two no-name pull saws, an Irwin Quick-Grip four-pack, Jorgensen bar clamps and a combination square. Clamps, in other words, and the cheapest tier of edge tools. Not one of the specific tools we rank first is on either list.
Two honest caveats. Last year is evidence, not a forecast; a maker can change its policy in any given November and we will only know when it happens. And “we did not find it” is not the same as “it did not happen” — a lightning deal on an individual ASIN can come and go in hours and never make a roundup. That is exactly why the picks below carry a live price rather than a remembered one.
Buy now, or wait for November?
The rule that falls out of the evidence is simple: wait only where the class of tool actually discounts, and only if you would buy the same tool either way. By class:
Premium bench planes (Lie-Nielsen, Veritas): buy when you need it. No published Black Friday percentage from either maker, last year or on their sites now. Waiting costs you the weeks of use and buys nothing we can point to. Our reasoning on which one is on Veritas vs Lie-Nielsen.
Mid-market planes (Stanley, WoodRiver, Taytools, Jorgensen): a reasonable wait. Woodcraft listed a WoodRiver plane under its regular price last year, and on the day this page was written our own price layer showed the Stanley No. 4 below its Amazon list price. The gap in both cases was modest, and neither is a promise about November. If you have a plane and want a better one, waiting is free. If you have no plane, buy the plane.
Chisel sets: it depends which tier. The sets that discounted on Amazon last year were the cheapest ones, the class we rank on best budget chisel sets and mostly tell you to skip. Narex, our pick at every price we cover, did not appear on any Black Friday page we read. Sorby, Two Cherries and the Japanese sets did not either. Buy the Narex when you need chisels.
Japanese saws: cheap ones discount, the good ones rarely.Import pull saws with no replacement blade were on Amazon's deal lists; SUIZAN and Gyokucho were not, though Woodcraft did list a Razorsaw ryoba at half price. A saw with a replaceable blade is a small purchase either way; buy it.
Clamps: wait, and buy in quantity.This is the one hand tool class where the evidence is consistent: Irwin Quick-Grip packs and Jorgensen bar clamps were on Amazon's deal lists, Rockler discounted a panel clamp, and on the day this page was written our own price layer showed the Irwin one-handed clamp well under its Amazon list price. Clamps are also the tool you always need more of, which makes them the right thing to hold a budget for. The ranking is on best woodworking clamps.
Sharpening stones and guides: buy now. We found no King, Shapton, DMT or Norton stone, and no honing guide, on any of the Black Friday pages we read. A stone is also the tool that makes every other tool on this page work, so it is the wrong one to defer. Start at best sharpening stones.
Precision squares: buy when you need one. Starrett and Woodpeckers did not appear on any sale page we opened. The Woodpeckers square is under a repair-or- replace tolerance promise that does not care what you paid for it.
Rust removers, wax and oil: never wait. The whole tin costs less than the shipping on a plane. Buy them the day you buy the tool they protect.
How to tell a real deal from a list-price trick
The most common Black Friday move on Amazon is not a discount at all: the “was” price is a list price the item has not sold at for months, and the “sale” is the price it has been all along. Three checks catch it.
Compare against a price you saw before November. That is what the cards on this page are for. Our price check runs daily and the date is printed under the table; note the number now and you have your own baseline when the sale banner appears.
Check the ASIN, not the name.Deal listings routinely swap a set for a smaller set, a 6-inch saw for the 9.5, or a plane for the same maker's cheaper line. Every buy button on this site resolves to a specific ASIN, and the listing it opens is the one we ranked.
Read the seller. A third-party seller at a striking price on a brand-name tool is the classic pattern for a gray-market import or an old revision. The WoodRiver V3, for instance, is a different plane from the V1 and V2 it replaced.

A deal changes the price of a tool and nothing else about it. The warranty exclusions, the parts catalog, the steel and the sole are the same on November 27 as on any other day, and those are what decide whether the tool gets bought once or twice. So the order of operations does not change in November: decide the tool from the ranked page first, then look at the price. Doing it the other way round — opening the deals page and finding a tool to want — is how a workshop fills with things bought at forty percent off that never earned a place on the bench.
The rebuy trap, in sale form
The tools that discount most reliably in this category are the cheapest tier of edge tools: the import chisel sets and no-name pull saws that were on Amazon's lists last year. Those are exactly the tools whose cost per decadelooks good and whose rebuy risk is high — no warranty, no parts, steel that will not hold an edge. A forty percent discount on a tool you replace in three years is more expensive than full price on one you do not. The number to watch on every card here is the rebuy-risk rating, not the price.
Where a wait genuinely pays
Clamps. It is the one class where last year's evidence points one way, where you buy in multiples so a small percentage compounds, and where the tool is simple enough that a sale-price unit is the same unit. If your budget has a “wait for November” line, it should be clamps. Everything else on this page is a tool you buy when you need it.
What we will and will not post here

Lee Valley runs a Cyber Monday event, and what its own pages describe is discounted gift cards toward a future purchase plus a separate seconds event for cosmetically imperfect tools. We did not find a published percentage off first-quality Veritas tools and do not claim one. Lee Valley's standard free-shipping threshold applies year-round.
Do Narex chisels go on sale for Black Friday?+
Not on any of the Black Friday pages we read from last year. The chisel sets that discounted were the cheapest import sets. Narex prices do move on Amazon through the year, which is why the card above carries a live price rather than a remembered one.
Is Amazon good for Black Friday hand tool deals?+
For clamps, yes; for the specific planes, chisels, saws and stones we rank first, last year's evidence says mostly no. The hand tool deals on the roundups we read were budget chisel sets, no-name pull saws, Irwin and Jorgensen clamps and a combination square. Lightning deals on individual listings can appear and vanish without making any roundup, so check the live price on the card rather than assuming either way.
Should I wait for Black Friday to buy a hand plane?+
If you have no plane, no. A first plane is the tool that teaches you what you want in a second one, and the weeks of use are worth more than a discount that may not come. If you already have a plane and are upgrading to a mid-market one, waiting is free and a modest discount is plausible on the evidence. For a premium maker, there is nothing to wait for.

We have not handled these tools. Nobody here has tested one, owned one, or taken one apart. Specifications come from the manufacturer or the retailer listing; warranty terms come from the maker's own warranty page; the cost-per-decade arithmetic is ours and reproducible.
