How we pick

Methodology

Written so a skeptical reader can reproduce any number on this site. If you can't, that's a bug — tell us.

The problem this method solves

The ranking field in this category splits into two groups. At the top are genuine editorial institutions with real testing and real credentials — forty-year-old woodworking magazines, publications fielding award-winning makers who document a dozen tools over weeks. We cannot imitate that honestly and we will not try, because we have no tools, no shop, no lab and no credentials.

Below them is everyone else, and most of them fake it. Three of the five affiliate roundups we read while researching this site claim or imply testing with no procedure, no named reviewer and no photographs; one states outright that it reviewed seven planes online. A reader has no way to distinguish the real testing from the invented, because both use the same words.

So we compete on the axis nobody occupies: a published, reproducible method built on documents anyone can check.It needs no lab, and per our competitor research it is completely unserved — zero of seven fetched competitors publish cost-of-ownership arithmetic, warranty comparisons, or repairability assessments, which are precisely the deciding factors for a buy-it-for-life buyer.

What we do: six steps

  1. Compile published specificationsfrom the manufacturer's own documentation — blade steel and hardness, sole material, bed angle, plate thickness, tooth geometry, dimensions. Every figure cited to its source and the date fetched.
  2. Read the manufacturer's manuals and instructions— setup, adjustment, maintenance and stated limits, in the maker's own words.
  3. Tabulate warranty terms— length, what voids them, what they exclude, whether they transfer to a second owner. Cited to the warranty page with the date checked.
  4. Verify repairability— are replacement irons, plates or parts actually purchasable? A tool you can rebuild is a fundamentally different proposition from one you replace.
  5. Compute cost per decade from the live price and a disclosed horizon. See below.
  6. Report what owners consistently report— always attributed to the source, never presented as our own finding.

What we do not do

We have not handled these tools.Nobody here has tested one, owned one, or taken one apart. Everything is compiled from published specifications, the manufacturers' manuals, and warranty and parts documentation — all cited, all checkable.

We also never write “we tested”, “we used”, “in our shop”, “after six months of use”, or “we were impressed by”. Not one of those would be true.

Cost per decade

The buy-it-for-life buyer's real question is is paying four times once cheaper than rebuying? We answer it with disclosed arithmetic:

Cost per decade = live price / comparison horizon in decades

The horizon is not a prediction about a specific tool. It is a normalization constant assigned from documented evidence, so that every tool on a page is compared on the same basis. The tier and the document it came from print next to every figure on this site.

Wherever a cost-per-decade figure appears, this disclosure appears with it: cost per decade is price divided by a fixed comparison horizon set by the tool's warranty and parts availability — not a prediction of how long your tool will last. The tier and its source are shown for every pick.

And a limit worth stating loudly. Cost per decade answers exactly one question: what a tool costs per unit time if it lasts its horizon. It does not tell you whether the tool is good. A cheap, undocumented tool can post a lower number than a well-made one and still be the wrong buy, which is why the rebuy-risk rating and the write-up sit next to it on every card. Read all three or none.

Rebuy risk

A Low / Medium / High rating driven only by cited facts, never by feel. It answers the question the cost-per-decade number cannot: how confident are we in that horizon?

  • Low — a lifetime warranty, and a renewable wear part, and resharpenable.
  • Medium— two of the three.
  • High— one or none.

One definition needs stating because we apply it differently from how it is usually phrased. “Renewable wear part” means one of two things: either replacement parts are genuinely purchasable (a plane iron, a saw blade), orthe tool has no separately consumable part at all. A chisel is monolithic; the edge is the tool and sharpening renews it. Scored the usual way — “are spare parts listed?” — a chisel would rate as high rebuy risk for having no spares to sell, which is precisely backwards. We publish the definition rather than applying it quietly.

Scores

The out-of-ten scores on this site are judgments from documented research: published specifications, the maker's manuals, warranty terms, parts availability and the cost-per-decade arithmetic. They are not lab measurements, because we have no lab.

They also never appear in structured data. There is no Review, reviewRating or aggregateRating markup anywhere on this site. Marking an editorial opinion up as a product review rating would contradict every page that says we have not tested anything, and there are no customer ratings here to aggregate.

Prices

Every price comes from the Amazon Product API and carries the date it was verified (currently Jul 24, 2026). If the data is more than 48 hours old the number disappears and the button falls back to “Check price on Amazon” — and the cost-per-decade figure is suppressed along with it, rather than being computed from a stale input.

There is no price field anywhere in this site's content files. It is structurally impossible for a page here to render a remembered or hand-typed number.

Sources

Every spec, warranty term and material claim carries a source, cited inline and collected at the foot of the page with the date fetched. Preference order: manufacturer documentation, then the maker's manual or warranty page, then a published standard, then a retailer spec listing, then attributed owner reports.

A claim with no available source is not published.We write “not published by the manufacturer” instead. An honest gap beats an invented fact, and the gaps are frequently the most interesting thing on the page — the discovery that Lee Valley publish a three-month satisfaction guarantee rather than a lifetime warranty came out of looking for a document that was not there.

How often this is reviewed

  • Prices: live at render, refreshed daily, suppressed after 48 hours.
  • Pick lists: quarterly, or immediately on a discontinuation or a stock-out.
  • Warranty terms and parts availability: quarterly.
  • Cost-per-decade figures: recomputed automatically with the live price.
  • Trust pages: semi-annually, or immediately on a policy change.
