Plane Numbers Explained
An inherited catalog numbering system that every maker still uses, and which nobody explains before selling you one.

Hand plane numbers are not a specification. They are Stanley's catalog numbers from the nineteenth century, and every maker since has kept them because everybody already knew them. That is the whole explanation, and it is worth knowing because it means the system is not entirely logical and you should not look for a pattern that is not there.
The one reliable rule: within the bench plane series, a higher number means a longer sole. Everything else is a special case.
The bench plane series
No. 1— about 5.5 inches. Genuinely tiny, and now essentially a collector's item. It commands prices out of all proportion to its usefulness.
No. 2— about 7 inches. Too small for most adult hands to use comfortably. Also mostly a collector's piece.
No. 3— about 8 inches. A small smoother. Genuinely useful for small work and for people with smaller hands, and much cheaper than a No. 1 or 2 because it is a user rather than a rarity.
No. 4— about 9 inches. The standard smoother and the most common plane in the world. If you own one bench plane it is probably this. Final passes, finish surface.
No. 4-1/2 — about 10 inches and, importantly, wider. The extra mass damps vibration, which helps on figured grain. A refinement, not a first purchase.
No. 5— about 14 inches. The jack plane, so called because it is the jack of all trades. The most useful single bench plane and the one to buy first if you dimension your own stock.
No. 5-1/2— a wider jack. Same logic as the 4-1/2.
No. 6— about 18 inches. The fore plane, between a jack and a jointer. A perfectly good tool that most people skip because it sits between two things they already own.
No. 7— about 22 inches. The jointer. Straightening long edges for glue-ups. The third plane most people buy, and the one there is no substitute for.
No. 8— about 24 inches and heavy. A jointer for people who joint a great deal. Genuinely tiring to use for long.
The special cases
No. 60-1/2— a low-angle block plane. Bevel-up, roughly 6 inches, adjustable mouth on the good ones.
No. 9-1/2— a standard-angle block plane. Same size, higher bed angle, less good on end grain.
No. 62— the low-angle jack. Fourteen inches, bevel-up at a 12-degree bed. Because the bevel angle adds to the bed angle, three irons at three bevels turn one body into three planes. The most versatile single plane in the whole numbering system, and the one we would buy if we could only buy one.
No. 80, 112, 151and the rest — scrapers, spokeshaves and specialists. Real tools, none of them a first purchase.
Which numbers actually matter
Four, in practice. A No. 4 to finish with. A No. 5 to flatten with. A No. 7 if you glue up panels. A block plane for everything you do one-handed. Everything else in the list is a refinement of one of those four, and there is no number in the catalog that will make you better at woodworking than a sharp iron will.

Scarcity and collectors, not usefulness. They were made in small numbers and are too small for most adult hands, so the price reflects the collector market rather than what the tool does.
