Bevel Up vs Bevel Down

One number decides how a plane behaves, and on one of these two systems you control it and on the other you do not.

This is the most useful piece of geometry in hand planing and it takes about a minute to understand. Once you have it, half the arguments about plane selection resolve themselves.

The number that matters is the effective cutting angle

What decides how a plane behaves on a given piece of wood is the angle at which the cutting edge meets the surface. Low angles slice; they are excellent on end grain and on softwood. High angles scrape more than they slice; they resist tearout on figured and interlocked grain at the cost of more effort.

The whole bevel-up versus bevel-down question is about who controls that number.

Bevel down: the angle is fixed

A conventional bench plane beds the iron bevel-down at 45 degrees. The flat back of the iron is what faces the wood, and the bevel is underneath, away from the work. The effective cutting angle is therefore the bed angle: 45 degrees, always, regardless of how you grind the bevel.

That means grinding at 25 or 30 degrees changes only how durable the edge is and how much steel supports it. It does not change how the plane cuts. To change the cutting angle on a bevel-down plane you either buy a plane with a different bed (a York pitch at 50 degrees, a middle pitch at 55) or you add a back bevel to the flat side of the iron, which works and which is a nuisance to undo.

Bevel up: the angle is yours

A low-angle plane beds the iron bevel-up at about 12 degrees. Now the bevel faces the work, so the effective cutting angle is bed angle plus bevel angle. The arithmetic is direct:

  • 12 degree bed + 25 degree bevel = 37 degree cut. Very low. End grain, softwood.
  • 12 + 33 = 45 degree cut. Identical to a standard bench plane. General work.
  • 12 + 38 = 50 degree cut. York pitch. Better on figured grain.
  • 12 + 50 = 62 degree cut. A high-angle plane. Difficult interlocked timber.

Three irons ground at three angles turn one plane body into three planes. That is the case for bevel-up, and it is a strong one: you carry one object and change its character with a two-minute blade swap.

What bevel-up costs you

Three real things, and they are usually left out of the pitch.

Your sharpening has to be consistent. On a bevel-down plane an inconsistent bevel angle makes the edge more or less durable. On a bevel-up plane it changes how the plane cuts. A honing guide stops being optional. See best honing guides.

The edge is less supported at high angles. A steep bevel on a bevel-up plane leaves a thinner wedge of steel behind the edge, which chips more readily in hard timber.

There is no chipbreaker.A properly set chipbreaker on a bevel-down plane is a genuinely effective tearout control — set it a fraction of a millimeter behind the edge and it breaks the shaving before it can lift. Bevel-up planes have no equivalent and rely on the mouth and the cutting angle instead.

Which system to commit to

Commit to one. Owning both means two sharpening regimes, two sets of spare irons and two mental models, for no benefit.

Bevel-up if you want the fewest objects, you already sharpen with a guide, and you like the idea of one body covering everything. A No. 62 low-angle jack plus two spare irons is a genuinely complete plane kit.

Bevel-downif you want the chipbreaker, you like traditional tools, or you are buying vintage — almost every good used plane is bevel-down, and that is where the value is.

What is the difference between bevel up and bevel down planes?

On a bevel-down plane the effective cutting angle is fixed by the bed, usually 45 degrees. On a bevel-up plane the cutting angle is the bed angle plus the bevel you grind, so you control it.

Should a hand plane blade be bevel up or bevel down?

Whichever the plane was designed for — it is a property of the plane, not a choice you make. Conventional bench planes are bevel-down; block planes and low-angle jacks are bevel-up.

What angle should I sharpen a bevel-up plane iron at?

Is a bevel-up plane better for figured wood?

It can be, by grinding a steeper bevel to raise the cutting angle. But a well-set chipbreaker on a bevel-down plane is also extremely effective, and bevel-up planes do not have one. Neither system wins outright.
