Coping Saw vs Fret Saw

A coping saw and a fret saw look like the same idea: a narrow blade stretched in a metal frame, able to turn and cut curves. They overlap enough that people use the names loosely, but they are built for different work, and buying the wrong one for the job is a common and avoidable annoyance. Both are framed saws, a small branch of the wider family set out on saw types compared.
Frame depth, which decides reach
The most visible difference is the depth of the frame — how far the blade sits from the back of the bow, which sets how far from an edge you can cut. A coping saw has a shallow frame, usually a few inches deep, so it reaches only a short way in from an edge. A fret saw has a dramatically deeper frame, often a foot or more, so it can reach far into the middle of a panel to cut an interior shape.
That single dimension explains most of what each is good at. If the cut is near an edge, the coping saw's shallow, stiff frame is easier to control. If the cut is deep inside a board, only the fret saw can physically reach it.
Blade and tooth count
Coping saw blades are relatively coarse and sturdy, pinned into the frame at each end. They clear waste quickly and tolerate the sideways nudging of following a curve in solid stock. A fret saw takes much finer, thinner blades — often the same fine blades a jeweler's scroll work uses — held by clamps rather than pins.

Blade tension and frame stiffness
Both saws only cut well when the blade is properly tensioned, because a slack thin blade wanders and bends instead of cutting where you point it. The coping saw tensions its blade by twisting the handle or the pinned spigots, and its stiff frame holds a firm tension that suits the pushing and steering of solid-wood curves.
A fret saw's deep frame has a little more spring in it, which is by design: the frame flexes slightly so it can hold a very fine blade under tension without snapping it, and some workers deflect the frame against the bench to load a fresh blade. The finer the blade, the more the tension — and the delicacy — matters.
Blade orientation, the trick worth knowing
On both saws the blade can be rotated in the frame so the teeth face the handle, the side, or straight ahead. This is not a gimmick; it is what lets you steer the frame around an obstacle while the cut keeps going in one direction. When removing dovetail waste, for instance, you turn the blade so the frame clears the workpiece while the teeth cut sideways across the baseline. Changing and tensioning a blade
Both saws are only as good as the tension on the blade, and both take cheap replacement blades, which is part of the appeal — a snapped or dull blade costs pennies. On a coping saw you slacken the handle, seat the pinned ends of the blade into the swivel spigots at each end, and tighten the handle to draw the frame tight against the blade. On a fret saw you clamp the plain ends of the blade in the frame's jaws, often while flexing the deep frame slightly against the bench so it springs back to hold tension. A blade that is too slack wanders and bows; over-tighten a fine fret blade and it snaps. Aim for a blade that rings when plucked and does not deflect under light side pressure.
How to use each well
A coping saw is happiest cutting curves in solid stock and clearing waste near an edge. Set the blade orientation for the cut, take smooth strokes, and turn the whole frame to follow a curve rather than twisting the blade in place. Whether it cuts on the pull or the push is a matter of how you seat the blade; many woodworkers set the teeth to cut on the pull for more control when clearing dovetail waste.
A fret saw rewards patience. Its fine blade cuts slowly and turns tightly, so let it find its own pace and steer with small movements; forcing it either snaps the blade or drifts the cut. For an interior cutout you drill a small hole in the waste, thread the blade through it, reattach the blade to the frame, and cut the shape out from the inside — something a coping saw's shallow frame usually cannot reach to do.
Choosing blades
Both take a range of blades, and matching the blade to the work matters as much as the saw. Coarser blades cut faster and clear waste quickly; finer, higher-count blades leave a cleaner edge and turn tighter, and are essential in thin material where a coarse blade tears or jumps. The usual rule holds — keep at least three teeth in the material, which is why plywood and veneer need a fine blade. What makes a good frame
A coping saw is cheap enough that a decent one costs barely more than a poor one, so buy a rigid frame with a smooth, positive blade-tensioning action and keep spare blades in a couple of grades. A wobbly frame or a fiddly tensioner is the main thing that makes a cheap coping saw frustrating. On a fret saw, the deep frame's rigidity and the quality of the blade clamps are what you are paying for; a frame that will not hold a fine blade under tension is worse than useless.
The overlap, and where it ends
The reason these two get confused is that in the middle — gentle curves in medium-thickness wood near an edge — either will do the job. The differences only become decisive at the extremes: a cut deep inside a panel that a coping saw cannot reach, or a radius so tight a coping blade cannot turn it. Match the saw to the extreme you actually work at. For the woodworker that is almost always the coping saw; for the scroll-sawyer or model-maker it is the fret saw.
Which to buy
For a woodworker, the coping saw, and it is not close. Buy a fret saw only when you specifically need tight interior scrollwork or to reach deep into a panel; for general furniture work it will mostly sit in the drawer while the coping saw does the day-to-day curves.
