The Stanley Type Study

A century of production changes, cataloged by collectors, that lets you date a plane from the shape of a small lever.

Stanley made bench planes continuously from the 1860s to the 1960s and beyond, and changed the design in small ways throughout. Collectors cataloged those changes into “types” — production periods identified by combinations of features — and the result is that a plane in your hand can be dated to within a few years from the shape of its parts.

That is genuinely remarkable documentation for a mass-produced object, and it is also the citable evidence behind this site's central claim: tools from a documented production window spanning 1867 to 1967 are still in ordinary working use.

Why it matters for a user, not a collector

Quality was not constant across a century. Material specifications, machining tolerances and casting thickness all moved, generally downward in the later runs as cost pressure increased. A type study lets you know which era you are holding rather than guessing from how clean it looks.

It also settles arguments about parts. Knowing the type tells you which frog design and which adjuster it should have, which is how you spot a plane assembled from mismatched donors — not a disaster for a user, and worth knowing you are buying.

The features that identify a type

You do not need to memorize these. You need to know what to look at, so that a type study chart is usable when you are standing in front of a plane.

The lateral adjustment lever. Whether it exists at all (the earliest planes have none), whether it is one piece or two, and the shape of its end. This is the single most diagnostic feature and the first thing to look at.

The frog receiver. How the frog seats on the casting, and whether there is an adjustment screw behind it. The design changed several times and is easy to see with the frog removed.

The depth adjustment knob. Size, material and the direction its thread turns.

The logo on the iron.Stanley used a series of distinct trademarks over the decades, and the “Sweetheart” heart-shaped logo of the 1920s is the best known. Note that irons are the most frequently replaced part, so the iron dates the iron rather than the plane.

Casting details. Raised ribs, patent dates cast into the bed, and the shape of the mouth.

Tote and knob. Height, profile and wood species. Low knobs versus high knobs is a well-known era marker.

How to use one in the field

Do not memorize. Have a type study chart accessible on your phone, and work through it in order — lateral lever first, then frog, then knob, then logo. Most planes resolve in under a minute.

Expect ambiguity. Planes were assembled from whatever parts were on hand during transitions, repaired with later parts, and mixed by owners over a century. A plane that reads as two different types usually is: an early body with a later frog. For a user that is fine.

What a type does not tell you

Whether the plane is any good. A late-type plane in excellent condition is a better user than an early-type plane with a cracked casting. Condition beats type, every time, and it is the mistake enthusiasts make most often.

What it is worth to you. Type drives collector value, and collector value is a different market from user value. Paying a collector premium for a tool you intend to use, modify and possibly re-iron is a common and expensive error.

The user's shortcut

If you want to skip all of this: pick up the plane, look for a crack in the casting, check the mouth is not broken, check the iron has enough length left and is not deeply pitted near the edge, and check the sole is not badly ground.
