This list is chosen on a different criterion from every other roundup on this site. Not best value, not best performance: the smallest set of tools that can build furniture and will still be working in fifty years.
That criterion selects differently than price does. It favors tools with nothing consumable in them, tools whose wear surface is renewable, and tools whose failure mode is “needs sharpening” rather than “needs replacing”. Several things that would win a value roundup do not appear here, and one thing here is more expensive than it needs to be for a good reason.
Why these eight
Chisels. A monolithic edge tool with no consumable part. The tool is the edge and sharpening renews it for as long as there is steel, which on a bench chisel is decades of daily use. This is the purest buy-it-for-life object in the workshop, and it is also one of the cheapest.
A bench plane. The casting is effectively permanent; the iron is the consumable and it is replaceable, which is why Bailey-pattern planes rate well here regardless of badge. A plane whose iron you cannot replace is a countdown; one whose iron you can is a tool.
A ryoba.The one compromise on this list, and it is deliberate. The teeth are impulse-hardened and cannot be filed, so the blade is a consumable. It is here because the maker sells replacement blades directly, which makes the handle and spine the lasting purchase — and because the alternative, a filed western saw, is a genuinely worse tool unless you learn to sharpen it. A combination waterstone and a honing guide. Without these, every other tool on this list stops working within a week. The guide is a mechanical jig with no edge and no consumable; the stone is consumed slowly and is the cheapest thing here to replace.
A wheel marking gauge. The layout tool that changes how joints fit. A wheel severs fibers where a pin gauge tears them, so the line is crisp and the chisel has something to register against. The wheel is replaceable and spares ship with it.
A combination square. The reference every other tool is checked against. This is the expensive one, and the reason is below.
A soft-face mallet. Drives chisels without splitting handles, and the faces are replaceable so the tool outlasts them.
The square, and what we found
The Starrett combination square costs several times what a hardware-store square costs, and the usual justification is that it is a lifetime tool. We went to check that, and what we found is more interesting than the usual story.
Starrett warrants against defects for one year, and states plainly that no manufacturer's precision tools are guaranteed to work for life. That is the opposite of the reputation, and it is on their own FAQ.
What they also do is run a repair service for precision tools passed between generations, and they have manufactured in Athol, Massachusetts since 1880 — where the combination square was invented. That is a different and arguably better kind of commitment than a warranty document: a warranty covers a defect at the point of sale, an ongoing repair service is what keeps a tool alive in 2070.
It is on this list because a square is the tool you check other tools with, so it is the one that has to be right. If the budget will not stretch, buy a cheaper square and check it against something known-square rather than trusting it. That is the honest version.
What is deliberately not here
A block plane. Genuinely useful and not essential to build things. Add it second; see best block planes.
A dovetail saw. The ryoba cuts joinery adequately. A dozuki cuts it much better and is the best third purchase on this whole site. See best dovetail saws.
Mortise chisels. Only if you chop mortises by hand.

The order to buy in
Stone and guide. Nothing else works without them, and they will sharpen every tool you ever buy.
Chisels. The most-used tools, and the cheapest to buy well.
Saw. You cannot cut anything without one.
Marking gauge and square. Layout decides whether joints fit; the tools only execute what you marked.
Plane. The most expensive item and the one you can improvise around longest.
Mallet. Anything heavy and non-metallic works until it annoys you.
The cheaper version
