How To Flatten A Plane Sole
A plane sole is a reference straightedge, and only three spots on it have to be dead true.

A plane sole is a straightedge with a blade poking through it. When the sole is true it rides on the high spots of a board and the iron shears them off; when the sole is bent it rides on whatever three or four points happen to be proud and the iron cuts wherever it can reach, which is not the same job. That is the entire reason sole flatness earns any attention at all: the sole is the reference the tool works from, and a reference that is itself curved produces curved work.
Before you reach for sandpaper, understand the honest version of this task, because the internet has turned sole lapping into a rite of passage it does not need to be. Most soles are close enough. A great many planes, new and old, will take a clean full-width shaving with a sole that is nowhere near a machinist's idea of flat, because the parts that have to be true are a small fraction of the whole casting. Lapping a sole that did not need it costs you an evening and removes metal you never get back. This guide is as much about deciding whether to do the job as about doing it.
The three points that actually have to be true
A bench plane references the work on three areas, and only three. The toe (the front of the sole) leads the plane onto the cut. The heel (the back) keeps it registered as it leaves. And the small area immediately in front of the mouth holds the wood down right where the iron is severing it. If those three sit in the same plane, the plane will flatten a board whatever the casting does in between.
A hollow in the middle of the sole is almost always harmless, and on many planes it is deliberate — some makers relieve the center so there is less surface to keep flat and less friction to fight. What you cannot tolerate is a sole that is convex (high in the middle), high right behind the mouth, or twisted along its length, because any of those lifts one of the three reference areas off the work and lets the plane rock. Diagnosis before dust: know which of those you have before you decide to lap anything.
How to check flatness before you touch it
Do this with the iron installed and tensioned but fully retracted. The casting flexes slightly under the pressure of the lever cap, so a sole checked or lapped without the iron in place is flat in a state you will never actually use it in. Then use any of three methods, from least to most exacting.
- The light test.Lay the sole on something known flat — float glass, a machinist's straightedge, the cast table of a machine — and look toward a light behind it. Light under the toe, heel or mouth is the problem you care about. Light only under the middle is not.
- The feeler gauge.Where you see light, try to slide a feeler gauge under. This turns “there is a gap” into a number, which is what tells you whether the gap is a few thousandths (ignore it) or something you can see daylight through (address it).
- The marker grid. The method that shows you exactly what to do. Scribble a grid of permanent-marker lines across the whole sole, take a few light passes on your flat abrasive, and look at what the marker survives. Ink left in a patch means that patch is low; bare metal means it is high. It maps the sole for you and it is how you know when to stop.
When not to bother
If the toe, heel and mouth area already contact your reference with no gap you can measure, the sole is done and you should put the sandpaper away. If the plane already takes a clean, even, full-width shaving, the sole is not your problem — look at the iron and the setup instead, which is what hand plane troubleshooting is for. Lapping is a fix for a specific, measured fault, not a ritual you owe every new purchase. The single most common mistake here is flattening a sole to chase a problem that was actually a dull or badly seated iron.
The lapping method, step by step
The job is abrasion against a flat surface. You do not need a machine; you need something genuinely flat to back the abrasive.
- Get a flat plate.A thick offcut of float glass, a granite surface plate or a lapping plate. A benchtop, a kitchen counter and a sheet of MDF are not flat enough to lap against — they will happily transfer their own gentle curve to your sole.
- Stick down wet-and-dry sandpaper. Spray adhesive or water tension holds it to the glass. Longer sheets are better than short ones so the whole sole stays supported through the stroke.
- Retract the iron, keep it tensioned.As above — lap the plane in the state it works in.
- Push the plane flat along the paper. Even pressure, full strokes, no rocking, no leaning on the toe. Let the abrasive do it. A little water or light oil keeps the grit cutting and clears the swarf.
- Read the marker.Re-ink and re-check as you go. You are working toward continuous fresh metal at the toe, the heel and the strip in front of the mouth — not a mirror over the entire sole.
Grit progression
Start only as coarse as the fault demands, then climb. Coarse grit removes metal fast and leaves deep scratches you then have to chase out; the finer you can start, the less work you make for yourself. A rough guide:

A polished sole glides more sweetly but it does not plane more truly, so treat the high grits as a comfort upgrade rather than part of the flattening. The same stones you use for sharpening are not the tool for this — save them for the iron and read the best sharpening stones for that side of the bench.
How flat is flat enough
Flat enough to take a full-width shaving without the plane rocking, and no flatter. For a smoother doing final passes the standard is a little higher because any error shows in the finished surface; for a jack hogging off rough stock it is lower, because that plane is not the one that leaves the last surface anyway. Chasing thousandths on a scrub or a jack is effort spent where the work will never see it.
The real risk: over-lapping
Metal you remove is gone. Lap too long, especially on coarse grit, and you can round the toe and heel over (a rocking “dub”), open the mouth wider than you want, or thin the casting to the point it flexes more, not less. Lean on the front of the plane and you will grind the toe low and create the convex sole you were trying to cure. Go slowly, check the marker often, and stop the moment the three reference areas read continuous. There is no prize for a sole that is flatter than the work can tell.
What to lap on, and why not your sharpening stones
The abrasive has to sit on something genuinely flat, and it has to be an abrasive you are willing to wear out, because flattening a sole eats grit. That is why sandpaper on glass or a granite plate is the standard answer rather than your bench stones. A waterstone dishes as you use it, and dragging a heavy iron casting across one would hollow it in minutes and ruin it for sharpening; a diamond plate survives but a large sole quickly loads it. Wet-and-dry paper is cheap, replaceable and comes in every grit, so you spend a sheet or two of it instead of the working life of a stone. Keep the sharpening abrasives for the iron, where the job is described in the best sharpening stones, and treat sole-lapping as a separate, coarser task with its own consumables.
The sides matter too, if you shoot
For most planing only the sole matters, but if you use a plane on a shooting board — running it on its side along a track to trim end grain square — then the side of the plane becomes a reference surface as well, and it needs to be flat and square to the sole. Most planes are close enough from the factory, but it is worth checking with a square before you rely on one for shooting, because a side that is out of square will trim your end grain out of square by exactly that amount. Correcting it is the same lapping process turned ninety degrees, and it is a job you only ever do if the plane has that specific role. For an ordinary bench or block plane that never sees a shooting board, ignore the sides entirely.
Where this sits in the bigger job
Sole flattening is one station in setting up a plane, and rarely the most important one. On a new plane it usually comes after honing the iron and before final assembly; on a rescued vintage plane it comes after rust removal and cleaning.
