A smoothing plane is the short bench plane that takes the final passes — the last tool to touch the wood before finish goes on. In the common numbering it is the No. 3 or, most often, the No. 4, with a sole around nine inches long. Its whole reason for existing is the surface it leaves: a well-set smoother produces a clean, glassy face straight off the iron, which is why the plane sits at the very end of the bench-plane sequence and does no other job.

Its one job: the finishing surface

Where a jack roughs and a jointer straightens, the smoother finishes. It comes out after the coarser planes have done the flattening, and it takes a whisper-thin shaving across the whole surface to remove the tracks and scallops they left, leaving a face ready for oil, wax or film. It is not a flattening tool and it is not built to be one — ask a smoother to true a cupped board and it will simply follow the cup. Its job begins where the flattening ends.

Why the sole is short

A short sole is a feature, not a limitation. A long plane bridges the hollows in a surface and cuts the high spots, which is what makes it straighten — but a smoother is meant tofollow the surface it is given and refine it, not correct it. The nine-inch sole drops into the last shallow low spots and cleans them where a longer plane would ride over them. Length is what makes a jointer straighten; the lack of it is what lets a smoother chase a surface into its final finish. Tight mouth, fine iron, close chipbreaker

A smoother is set up for its finest possible cut, and three things do that work. The mouth is closed down tight, so the sole holds the fibers down right at the point the iron severs them and they cannot lift into tearout. The iron is honed razor sharp and nearly straight, with only the faintest relief at the corners so it does not leave a step at the edge of each pass. And on a bevel-down smoother the chipbreaker is set very close to the edge, a fraction of a millimeter back, to curl and break the shaving before it can tear. Set the iron to project barely at all, and the shaving comes off thin enough to read print through.

That close relationship between mouth, iron angle and chipbreaker is also why the bevel-up and bevel-down families set a smoother up differently — the trade-offs are worked through in bevel up vs bevel down.

How it replaces sanding

A sharp, well-set smoother leaves a surface that sandpaper cannot match, and understanding why is the reason many hand-tool woodworkers stop sanding altogether. A planed surface takes finish more evenly and shows the grain with a depth a sanded one rarely does. It is also faster and cleaner — no dust, no grit progression, no worn-out paper — and quieter. The catch is that it demands a genuinely sharp iron and cooperative grain; on wild, reversing figure even a good smoother can lose to a scraper or, occasionally, to sanding. But on straight-grained work, the smoother is the reason the sandpaper stays in the drawer.

Using it: the finishing sequence

A smoother comes out last, and how you use it reflects that. You are not removing much wood, so you take light, overlapping passes across the whole surface, reading the grain and working in the direction that leaves the fewest torn fibers. Because the cut is so fine, the smoother also shows up any high spot the coarser planes missed — a place where it suddenly bites deeper or skips is a message about the flattening, not the smoother. Work the surface until the whole face carries the same clean sheen, then stop; a smoother rewards knowing when to put it down as much as knowing how to push it. Skew the plane slightly for an easier shearing cut on stubborn patches, and keep the mouth and sole clear of packed dust between passes so nothing drags across your finished surface.

When a smoother meets figured wood

The one place a smoother is tested is highly figured, reversing or interlocked grain — curl, quilt, bird's-eye and the like — where the fibers change direction constantly and no single planing direction is safe. Here you lean on every tearout control at once: a razor iron, the finest possible cut, a tight mouth, and on a bevel-down smoother the chipbreaker set very close to the edge. If it still tears, a card scraper or a scraper plane takes over, shearing the surface at a scraping angle that figure cannot lift. This is also where the bevel-up smoother earns interest, because you can raise its effective cutting angle simply by honing a steeper bevel — the trade-off is weighed in bevel up vs bevel down. On ordinary straight grain none of this is needed; the smoother just works.

No. 3 or No. 4?

Both are smoothers; the difference is width and mass. The No. 4is the default — the most common bench plane ever made, a comfortable size for most hands, and the one to buy first. The No. 3 is narrower and lighter, which suits smaller hands and tight work; the No. 4-1/2 is wider and heavier, favored by people who smooth large panels and want the extra mass to carry the cut. For a first smoother the plain No. 4 is almost always the right answer, and it heads the finishing category on the best hand planes.

The plane you keep the sharpest

Because the smoother leaves the surface you actually see, it is the plane that most rewards a keen edge and punishes a dull one. A jack can be a little dull and still rough stock; a smoother with a dull iron leaves tearout and burnish exactly where it shows. Keep this iron the sharpest on the bench, hone it often, and it will hand you finished surfaces for a lifetime — a plane bought once, kept sharp, and never replaced. That is the smoother's quiet economy: it does the job that would otherwise cost you sandpaper forever, with a tool that costs you nothing after the edge.
