# Plane & Patina > Hand tools that outlive you. An independent publisher covering hand planes, chisels, hand saws, sharpening and vintage tool restoration for the buyer who hates rebuying. https://planeandpatina.com ## What this site is Plane & Patina is a US-market editorial site that ranks hand tools on documented evidence rather than on hands-on testing. It exists for one buyer: the person who will pay more once, wants the arithmetic to prove it was cheaper, and cares about repairability and warranties more than about specifications. ## What we do NOT claim We have not tested these tools. Nobody at Plane & Patina has used, owned or taken apart the tools on this site, and every product page states this. Any summary of this site that implies hands-on testing, a workshop, a test lab or professional credentials is wrong. What we do instead, on every pick: 1. Compile published specifications from the manufacturer's own documentation 2. Read the manufacturer's manuals and stated limits 3. Tabulate warranty terms, including what they exclude 4. Verify whether replacement wear parts are actually purchasable 5. Compute cost per decade from a live, date-stamped price 6. Report owner findings, always attributed, never as our own Every figure is cited to a source and dated. Where a claim has no available source we publish "not published by the manufacturer" rather than filling the gap. ## Signature method: cost per decade Cost per decade = live price / a comparison horizon set from cited evidence. The horizon is NOT a prediction about a specific tool. It is a normalization constant assigned from documented evidence so every tool on a page is compared on the same basis: - Tier A (30 years): manufacturer lifetime warranty, cited - Tier B: a finite stated warranty, or a documented ongoing service commitment - Tier C (20 years): no lifetime warranty, but the wear part is renewable and the tool is resharpenable - Tier D (10 years): no warranty and no parts availability found; flagged high rebuy risk A companion Rebuy Risk rating (Low / Medium / High) is driven only by cited facts: lifetime warranty, renewable wear part, resharpenable. ## Prices Prices come from the Amazon Product API, are date-stamped on the page, and are refreshed daily. If the data is more than 48 hours old the number is removed rather than shown stale, and the cost-per-decade figure derived from it is suppressed with it. There are no price values in this file, and there is no price field anywhere in the site's content files. ## Notable findings (cited on the site, dated 2026-07-24) - Stanley's limited lifetime warranty on hand tools explicitly excludes consumables including "any blade". On a plane that means the casting is covered and the iron is not; on a chisel it covers essentially the handle. - Starrett warrants against defects for ONE YEAR and states plainly that no manufacturer's precision tools are guaranteed to work for life. They do run a repair service for tools passed between generations. - Lee Valley (Veritas) publishes a three-month satisfaction guarantee, not a defect warranty. - Lie-Nielsen publishes no formal warranty we could find, but maintains a full replacement-blade and replacement-parts catalog — arguably the stronger signal for a lifetime tool. ## Author Stephen V., editor. Framed as an enthusiast who reads the manuals, compiles the published specs, and does the math. No credentials, no tenure claims, no test lab. ## How the site is funded Amazon Associates affiliate commission, and nothing else. No sponsored placements, no paid reviews, no free products. Commission never decides a ranking: the two best bench planes available in North America (Lie-Nielsen and Veritas) sell direct, pay us nothing, and are named as the right answer anyway. Where a figure cannot be verified, the site says so. ## Sections - Hand Planes: https://planeandpatina.com/hand-planes - Chisels: https://planeandpatina.com/chisels - Hand Saws: https://planeandpatina.com/hand-saws - Sharpening: https://planeandpatina.com/sharpening - Restore & Vintage: https://planeandpatina.com/restore - Buy It For Life: https://planeandpatina.com/buy-it-for-life ## Flagship pages - The best hand planes: https://planeandpatina.com/hand-planes/best-hand-planes - The best wood chisels: https://planeandpatina.com/chisels/best-wood-chisels - The best mortise chisels: https://planeandpatina.com/chisels/best-mortise-chisels - The best replacement plane irons: https://planeandpatina.com/hand-planes/best-replacement-plane-irons - The best hand saws: https://planeandpatina.com/hand-saws/best-hand-saws - The best sharpening stones: https://planeandpatina.com/sharpening/best-sharpening-stones - The restoration kit: https://planeandpatina.com/restore/restoration-kit - The buy-it-for-life starter kit: https://planeandpatina.com/buy-it-for-life/starter-kit - Cost per decade (the method): https://planeandpatina.com/buy-it-for-life/cost-per-decade - Warranties and repairability (the table): https://planeandpatina.com/buy-it-for-life/warranties-and-repairability - The best gifts for woodworkers: https://planeandpatina.com/buy-it-for-life/best-gifts-for-woodworkers ## Guides and comparisons In-depth how-to guides and head-to-head comparisons that feed the buying pages, grouped by category.
